The Art of Matelassé

Matelassé is a weaving technique that utilises variations in yarn tension to create a raised, dimensional surface. The pattern itself is rendered in relief, offering a depth that printed textiles can never replicate.

For this piece, we selected a wisteria-toned fabric with a soft blue undertone, adorned with large floral motifs. While the relief is apparent even when laid flat, it truly comes alive when draped against the body in motion, catching the light anew with every gesture. Standing, sitting, or turning—the garment reveals a different facet of its character. This is the true allure of matelassé.

The Definitiveness of the Cut

With patterned textiles, the cut determines everything. Where should each blossom fall? How will the motifs align across the seams? We position and reposition the pattern templates repeatedly, only committing to the shears once absolute harmony is achieved.

Once the fabric is cut, there is no turning back. It is the most exacting stage of the couture process.
